Recipient of American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, 2019—2021

My name is Marsha Christanvia Wibowo. I’m from Jakarta, Indonesia and came to the U.S. for my undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I graduated from MIT in 2016 with a Bachelor degree in Biology. Currently, I am a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Biological & Biomedical Sciences program at Harvard Medical School. For my Ph.D. program, all students receive guaranteed funding from the school for the first 2 years that covers our tuition, health insurance, and living costs. From the 3rd year onward, our tuition and stipend are paid for by either our professor (whose lab we are in) or by external fellowships. However, there is a very limited number of external fellowships that international students can apply for. I personally received a predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association (AHA) for my 3rd and 4th year of graduate school.

For the AHA predoctoral fellowship, I had to write a 5-page research proposal describing the details of my project and how it aligns with the AHA’s mission. I also had to provide 3 recommendation letters and other paperwork including description of the use of animals in my research, budgeting, CV, etc. I applied in July 2018, heard back in November 2018, and the award is active from January 2019-January 2021.

I am very grateful to have received the AHA predoctoral fellowship. It’s a competitive fellowship and I did not receive it when I first applied for it back in 2017. I am very happy that I was awarded the fellowship the second time around. To me, it is a valuable recognition that the AHA sees the importance of the research questions I am pursuing and is willing to fund my project.

Other than studies, I have been heavily involved with the Southeast Asian Service Leadership Network (SEALNet) in the past 7 years. We conduct service leadership projects in various cities and countries in Southeast Asia.

For those of you who would like to know more about my fellowship, please contact me at marshacw93@gmail.com or IG: @mchristanvia (but I’m not very active). Thank you.
